Much progress has been made in many areas of concrete technology since the publication of the first edition of "Concrete." For those familiar with the first edition, very little has been removed, while the chapters on cements, aggregates, chemical admixtures, concrete construction practices, and durability have undergone major revision. As in the first edition, the authors present a unified view of concrete behavior based on basic principles. The material on workability of concrete is prefaced by a general discussion of the principle of rheology; mechanical properties are discussed from the point of view of concrete as a multiphase material; and the underlying chemistry of hydration and microstructure of hardened cement paste are emphasized. The result is a cohesive presentation of practical applications supported by detailed background information, which serves both the undergraduate and the practicing professional engineer.
